Purity and corruption are best in Nioh 2 by far IMO. Water is also still great and does the same thing it did in Nioh 1. A lot of people do like lightning because it’s easy to buff lightning damage early and electrified enemies are slowed down but there’s the counter point that slowed enemies can throw off your timing while you’re learning their movesets.

By that point, you are no longer tied to any particular build or playstyle. You can play Ninjutsu, Magic, melee, practically anything you want. Some builds will still be more "meta" I guess, but if you build yours right it should still perform regardless.
